How the conversion works
A U-100 syringe is marked for insulin at 100 units per millilitre. One unit is one hundredth of a millilitre, so 10 units is 0.10 ml and 50 units is 0.50 ml, on any U-100 barrel. What changes between barrels is the smallest mark: a 1 ml syringe is usually marked every 2 units, a 0.5 ml syringe every 1 unit, and 0.3 ml syringes come in 1-unit and half-unit versions. The converter rounds to the marks that exist on the barrel you chose, and tells you when your number falls between two marks.
Not for U-40 syringes
U-40 insulin syringes are used for some veterinary insulins and have a different scale. This tool will give a wrong answer for a U-40 syringe. If your syringe says U-40, ask your vet or pharmacist.
Check with your prescriber
The number you draw up is set by your prescriber. If the amount you have been told to use does not land on a mark on your syringe, do not round it yourself. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist which syringe to use, or whether a different barrel would let you measure it exactly.
